The Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Associations launched its first annual Graduates Program in 1993. The goal of this program is to recognize the scholastic achievements of high school graduating students of Jamaican descent and encourage them to pursue post secondary education

To further enhance the program a bursary componenent was added in 1998. This is a one time bursary awarded to students who meet the criteria. We started with one award of $500.00. In 2006 we awarded a total of seven bursaries for a total amount of $23,000.00 - the largest amount disbursed to date. The support from our member associations and some community organizations was significant and sponsors like Jamaica National, and Western Union gave generously.

An essay writing competition was later added to the program and has been partially sponsored by the North America Gleaner. This offers the winners a trophy and cash prizes as well as the opportunity to have their essays published in the Extra news paper.

All the graduates were presented with certificates that were generously donated and presented to the students by the Honourable Mary Ann Chambers, Minister of Children and Youth Services. A reception for all the attendees followed the ceremony. Parents family members, friends, teachers and community supporters are encouraged to attend the ceremony and the reception

The number of bursaries awarded is dependent on available funding and contributions. Over the past few years, the AJAA has come to realize that a great number of students need assistance in acquiring post secondary education. In order to assist in fulfilling this need and reduce the number of disappointed and very promising students we are embarking on a Scholarship drive to raise at least 30,000 by May 15th, 2007.

The AJAA continues to seek the help of everyone to provide more opportunities for a good education to our deserving youth. We have faith in their abilities and are confident that given the opportunity they will continue to succeed and make us proud.
