Emerging Global Leaders Program - Canada

“Humber College is committed to developing broadly educated, highly skilled and adaptable citizens to be successful in careers that significantly contribute to the communities they serve – locally, nationally and globally” (Humber Strategic Plan, 2013-2018).

It is with this mandate and the recognition for the need to effectively navigate and influence our increasingly globalised and interdependent world, that Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning and the Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Associations (AJAA – Toronto) are excited to announce the launch May 2015 of the Emerging Global Leaders Program (EGLP), with support from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).

The EGL program was previously successfully housed at York University and has attracted passionate secondary students from local communities within Toronto and internationally from the Caribbean. Humber College is excited to take on this partnership initiative with the AJAA to help students to create positive social change within their communities.

Program Overview:

The EGL program is a 3-day leadership program designed to engage high school students from across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and from Jamaica to lead and foster positive impact within their communities, with a global lens. Participants will be invited to participate in the Emerging Global Leaders program: from Jamaica, from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) /Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), and Aboriginal youth from local First Nations communities around Toronto.

Students involved with the EGLP will have the opportunity to learn and grow alongside their peers in an enriching leadership journey that draws upon the strengths of participants. The 3-day retreat will include interactive workshops, guest speakers, reflection activities and skill building sessions to expose students to a variety of local and global issues.

Learning Outcomes/Participant Experience:

The EGL program provides students with the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue around the contexts and challenges of leadership. Through the creation of a diverse learning environment enriched by the students’ international and intercultural perspectives, the EGL program is a dynamic forum for participants to critically engage with global issues, build valuable skills in cross-cultural communication, and facilitate networking and project management skill development while further fostering their skills as agents of change in a highly globalized world.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate their personal styles, skills and values
  • Apply a variety of project management tools and skills to community-centered projects
  • Foster collaborations within and across communities through networks and partnerships
  • Gain a deeper understanding of global and local social justice issues
  • Understand and appreciate the breadth and diversity of leadership in a global context
  • Acquire an awareness of key tools and strategies to spearhead and sustain community development initiatives within their respective communities as global agents of change
